Be a lifeline for someone in crisis

Volunteering as a Crisis Counselor is one of the most powerful ways to make a difference in suicide prevention. Our trained volunteers answer calls, texts, and chats from people experiencing emotional distress—offering hope, support, and connection when it matters most.

Whether you’re exploring a career in mental health, making a meaningful change, or simply want to support your community, the Suicide Prevention Center welcomes you.

What to Expect

No experience needed—just compassion and commitment.

We provide all the training you’ll need to feel confident and supported in your role. You’ll learn to use evidence-based approaches, de-escalate crises, and navigate difficult conversations with empathy and care.

Volunteer Qualifications:

  • Must be at least 18 years old
  • Comfortable using computers
  • Able to commit to one 4-hour shift per week for 12 months
  • Attend all training sessions and complete mentorship
  • Shift options: remote, on-site (Los Angeles), or hybrid

Training and Support

Our 6-week training program is a mix of live virtual classes, mentorship, and self-paced learning. Volunteers are guided every step of the way and receive ongoing supervision and support once on the line.

Training includes:

  • Twice-weekly live classes via Zoom
  • One-on-one mentor sessions
  • Role-playing and skills development
  • Asynchronous assignments and 988-required modules

Following training, new volunteers begin with a 3-month “apprenticeship period” where they’re closely supported as they transition into regular shifts.

Shifts

Volunteers select one regular shift from the following rotating blocks (availability may vary):

  • 8:30 a.m.–12:30 p.m.
  • 10:30 a.m.–2:30 p.m.
  • 12:30 p.m.–4:30 p.m.
  • 2:30 p.m.–6:30 p.m.
  • 4:30 p.m.–8:30 p.m.
  • 6:30 p.m.–10:30 p.m.
  • 8:30 p.m.–12:30 a.m.

Make an Impact

Every shift, volunteers help someone in crisis feel heard, seen, and supported. Many of our counselors go on to graduate school, clinical internships, or long-term careers in mental health.

Whether you’ve been personally impacted by suicide or simply want to help others feel less alone, this is your opportunity to show up for those in need.
