Working with media to inform and protect

Media and press

Didi Hirsch Mental Health Services works with members of the media to reduce stigma around mental illness, substance use, and suicide—and to highlight our expertise in treatment, training, and advocacy. Our goal is to support accurate, respectful, and responsible reporting that informs and protects our communities.

We welcome media inquiries and offer guidance to ensure stories about mental health and suicide are handled with care.

Responsible reporting on suicide and mental health

Media guidelines

To promote safety and reduce risk, we encourage all journalists and content creators to follow established best practices when covering suicide or mental health topics. These include:

  • Avoiding detailed descriptions of suicide methods or notes
  • Using non-stigmatizing language like “died by suicide” instead of “committed suicide”
  • Including support resources like the Suicide & Crisis Lifeline (988) in your coverage
