In Solidarity: A message from our CEO
Dear Clients, Staff and Community,
During this time of unbelievable pain, Didi Hirsch Mental Health Services stands in solidarity with the Black community in the fight against racism and injustice. Didi Hirsch Mental Health Services’ mission is to serve “communities where stigma or poverty limits access.” Stigma begets prejudice and discrimination that reaches far beyond its destructive impact on our mental health. From birth, it robs people of equal opportunities.
It also steals years from their lives. The disproportionate percentage of coronavirus deaths among people of color due to limited access to healthcare is but one example. The most horrible is murder. Who cannot feel outrage and grief watching the last 8 minutes and 46 seconds of George Floyd’s life? But it is far more traumatic for individuals who have lived in fear—for themselves and those they love—their whole lives.
I take heart knowing that across our troubled nation hundreds of thousands of people, of all ages and colors, marched to say ENOUGH. And I take heart watching police officers take a knee with protesters and kneel with our religious leaders. That passion and compassion must be sustained to make a lasting difference. Because Black lives matter.
Didi Hirsch stands with those advocating for change in this country. We must speak up when we hear bigoted slurs and jokes, even when we are a voice of one. We must engage in dialogue to better understand lived experiences of those without white privilege. We must ensure that as health professionals we check all unconscious biases and ensure all communities receive the highest quality care. For the past 78 years, Didi Hirsch has remained committed to helping children and adults thrive despite the injustices and inequities of our society. Collectively, we must fight for justice and a brighter future for all.
With hope and determination,
Kita S. Curry, PhD
