Supporting educators in student mental health
Teachers are often on the frontlines when it comes to noticing shifts in a student’s behavior, mood, or performance. We know how important educators are in creating safe spaces, identifying warning signs, and connecting youth to the support they need. Here, we provide guidance, tools, and resources to help teachers feel equipped and supported in promoting student mental health.
Recognizing when a student may need help
Students may not always share directly what they’re going through. As a teacher, you might notice changes such as:
- Withdrawal from friends or class activities
- Frequent absences or declining grades
- Irritability, hopelessness, or increased anxiety
- Talking or writing about death, sadness, or loneliness
- Risk-taking or disruptive behaviors
When in doubt, trust your instincts. Early conversations and connections can make a big difference.
How Teen Line can help your students
Teen Line provides confidential, peer-to-peer support for teens who may feel more comfortable talking to someone their own age. Students can connect by:
- Calling (800) 852-8336 (6–10pm PST daily)
- Texting TEEN to 839863 (6–9pm PST daily) (Standard rates apply)
- Reach out by Email
As a teacher, you can share these options in your classroom, resource boards, or directly with students who may need them.
