Access to compassionate care when it’s needed most can resonate for a lifetime. For a former client, the care he received at Didi Hirsch during a transitional time in his life stayed with him. Now, decades later, he is giving back so others can receive the same support when it matters most.

Shortly after graduating college in the 1970s, he tried to break into the entertainment industry without connections or a clear path forward. Repeated rejection left him discouraged and uncertain about his future.

Realizing that he needed a qualified person to talk to, he sought help. After learning about Didi Hirsch, he got in touch and began receiving counseling services soon after, at no cost. What stayed with him most, wasn’t the number of sessions, but the impact the care had on his life when he needed it.

“That’s reason I never ever forgot Didi Hirsch, ever. They were there when I needed someone–some help and guidance. They were there.”

At the time, he could not afford to pay, and was told not to worry about it. Receiving those services made a meaningful difference.

For those who are struggling, whether they’re young or old, it doesn’t matter. Having access to that kind of help is invaluable and lifesaving. The impact of it is incalculable. ”

He went on to have a successful career in the entertainment industry, and throughout his life, remains an advocate for therapy and mental health. Aware of the stigma and lack of access many still face, giving back now allows him to pay it forward.

“If I got something out of it, I know other people are going to be able to get something out of it too. And I want as many people as possible, who are in need of services, to be able to get it.”

For him, mental health care is essential to a meaningful life. What our organization provided then continues to matter now more than ever.
